Warehouse Artist Lofts

The Lawrence Warehouse, by architect Clarence Cuff, is among Sacramento's earliest reinforced-concrete buildings — built beside the Southern Pacific tracks for merchandise storage and listed on the National Register. After sitting largely unused since the Second World War, it reopened in 2015 as the Warehouse Artist Lofts, the flagship of the R Street revival.

The $41.5 million project — the Capitol Area Development Authority, R Street Investors and Holliday Development, and the signature project of the late Ali Youssefi — created 116 affordable live/work rental homes from studios to three-bedrooms, with galleries and retail at street level and a rooftop deck over the tracks.

It began life on paper as a market-rate condo concept called Capitol Lofts; what got built is better — a curated artist community in the middle of the corridor's breweries and design shops.
